African/

African-American Pageant

In 1991, the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont started the Ms. Africa/African-American Educational Pageant to instill a sense of pride and understanding of African history, which connects African-Americans with their heritage, and to encourage and support young Africans and African-Americans in their pursuit of academic excellence. The annual pageant brough together contestants from Africa, and African-America students  from local universities  and colleges to share valuable knowledge about their respective countries and heritage.  The pageant offered a fun-filled, family-oriented program and provided contestants with the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the history and habitation of our ancestors.

The Liberian Organization of the Piedmont through its corporate and individual sponsors annually awarded winner scholarships and Study Abroad Program.  In 2001, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company provided funding for the winners of the  pageant to participate in a five-week Wake Forest University Study-Abroad Program in Benin,  West Africa and scholarship funds provided by Dr. Maya Angelou and the Wake Forest University Multicultural Affairs Department for winners of first and second place.

Besides corporate and individuals sponsors, the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont has enjoyed overwhelming support from Winston- Salem State University Student Government and Wake Forest University Black Student Alliance for the Ms. Africa/African-American Educational Pageant. In Late 1992, the Liberian Organization of  the Piedmont outsourced the Ms. Africa/African-American Educational Pageant  to  James Hunder’s Creative Arts International.
