Old Salem - Liberia:  Historic Ties & Flag Presentation

Historic St. Phillips Moravian Church in Old Salem hosted a flag presentation ceremony in March which was sponsored by Old Salem and the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont.

Liberia, which means "Free Land," began as a settlement of freed slaves and free blacks from the United States in 1822 and became a Republic in 1847.

The Liberian Organization of the Piedmont, lead by current president and founder, James Hunder, organized the service to acknowledge the historic ties between Liberia and Winston-Salem.  Photos(Complete article published in the Winston-Salem Chronicle, March 25, 2010 edition.)

Special Projects

The Liberian Organization of the Piedmont’s Special Projects support community-based health, education, and community service programs within the triad metropolitan cities, US-Liberian communities and Monrovia-based communities.

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful

The Liberian Organization of the Piedmont in collaboration with Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful/ Roadway Appearance Division adopted Liberia Street in Happy Hill Garden as part of the Adopt-A-Street Program.

Save-A-Child

Besides, Keep Winston-Salem City Beautiful/Roadway Appearance Division Adopt-A-Street Project, the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont, launched two major community-based support programs; Save-A-Child and Books for Liberian Schools projects.

During Liberia’s civil war, a Liberian child, Stanley McGill was born in 1999 with an imperforate anus. He had a colostomy performed at 10 days of his life and a pull-through operation performed. But, all medical efforts to correct his medical problem failed.

In 2001, LOP President James Hunder, Sr., sought medical assistance from Dr. Ed Wilson and Dr. Timothy C. Pennell, of Wake Forest University School of International Health Services and Dr. Robert W. Litton of Wake Forest Medical Baptist Hospital mission for baby Stanley to travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for medical treatment.  Upon his arrival, Dr. Robert W. Litton, examined him and surgery was performed. Baby Stanley is well and now resides in the United States with his mother, Catherine Williams.

Books for Liberian Schools

In 2002, the Liberian Organization of the Piedmont launched Books for Liberian Schools project in partnership with Goler A.M.E. Zion Church, Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, and Forsyth Technical Community College for medical, law, computer, science, and mathematical books for the University of Liberia, Cuttington University, other colleges and /or community Colleges.  As a result, the LOP and Golfer A.M.E. Zion Church through Pastor Rev. Dr. Seth O. Lartey shipped to Liberia a 40-foot container of books for Liberian schools.
